Ashland Women Defeat Trojans, Stay Atop Great Midwest Table

Ashland University's women's soccer team knows it needs three points per game to stay in first place in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference table.

Three points is exactly what the Eagles got on Saturday (Oct. 1) afternoon at Ferguson Field, thanks to a 3-0 decision over Trevecca Nazarene. Ashland improves to 8-3 overall and 6-1 in the Great Midwest, and earned its third consecutive clean sheet.

"We accepted the challenge of not performing our best during the week," said Ashland head coach Cayleb Paulino. "I think that was one of the expectations today, that we were playing a team that is top 10 in the region, a team that's going to be in the conference tournament, so put yourself in an environment where you're making a statement for the rest of the conference to say, 'man, Ashland's the real deal.'"

The Trojans are 6-3-2, 4-2-1.

Ashland's victory came prior to the dedication of the Danny Krispinsky Memorial Shelters at Ferguson Field, as well as Senior Day. Sophomore forward McKinley Mendenhall, who wears Krispinsky's No. 21, said, "Danny was a really big influence for me growing up. He did personal trainings with me, and I got to know him really well, and I know his family, and his family goes to my church, and they mean a lot to me.

"It means a lot to wear his number and represent him."

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Following a scoreless first half, senior forward Bailey Clark continued her penchant for go-ahead goals in the 53rd minute, taking her own rebound and sneaking it into the Trojan net left to right. Clark's fifth goal of 2022 was unassisted – and turned out to be her fourth game-winner of the campaign.
  • Then, in the 62nd minute, Mendenhall, Ashland's assist leader, took a rebounded and scored her own goal, her third of the season, to put the Eagles up 2-0. Mendenhall's tally also was unassisted.
  • "I've been kind of changing positions, either going out wide as a mid or go out top," she noted.
  • Ashland moved the score to 3-0 in the 72nd minute on freshman forward Dani Hicks' fourth goal of the season. Mendenhall crossed it to Hicks for her team-high eighth helper of the fall – tied for eighth in a season in program history.
  • "We actually challenged those three at halftime and said they need to be more dangerous in the box," Paulino said. "I'm glad that those three were able to get on the scoresheet today."

THE WRAP-UP
  • Senior goalkeeper Bri Rogers stopped four shots in earning her third straight shutout, the fifth of the season and the 13th in less than two full seasons as an Eagle.
  • "It's tough to keep clean sheets in the conference, and to do three in a row is great," said Paulino.
  • The Eagles had a decided 23-8 lead in shots.
  • Ashland is 3-0-1 all-time against the Trojans.
