In the opening game of the 2021 fall season, Ashland University's men's soccer team rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit, knotting #RV McKendree 1-1 following 110 minutes in Columbus, Ohio.
WHAT HAPPENED
- In the first half, the Eagles outshot the Bearcats, 4-3, but McKendree potted the only goal of the first 45 minutes when Philipp Schmidt scored an unassisted tally in the 31st minute.
- Ashland knotted the game in the 71st minute when senior forward Kieran Paterson scored on a penalty kick. Going back to the end of the 2021 spring campaign, that is Paterson's sixth goal in the last four games, and his 17th goal in an AU uniform.
- The second half saw the Eagles out-shoot the Bearcats by an 8-3 margin.
- Ashland had the only two shots in the overtime periods, both coming in the first 10-minute OT.
NOTES
- Junior goalkeeper Brett Robinson, making his first start for the Eagles since 2019, played all 110 minutes and made three saves.
- The Eagles outshot McKendree, 14-6. Both corner kicks (8-7 AU) and fouls (13-11 AU) were fairly even.
- Ashland's starting 11 featured nine seniors, one junior and one sophomore.

Ashland will stay in Columbus to take on another regional rival, No. 4-ranked Indianapolis, on Sunday (Sept. 5) at 2:30 p.m.
