On Sunday (Sept. 5) afternoon in Columbus, Ohio, Ashland University's men's soccer team was less than six minutes away from toppling No. 4 Indianapolis, but two Greyhound goals in a span of 2:07 resulted in a 3-2 victory.
The Eagles are 0-1-1, while UIndy is 2-0.
WHAT HAPPENED
- Sunday's game started with a furious pace, as the Greyhounds scored in the third minute when Eli Dulle assisted Felix Schutz for an early 1-0 advantage. Ashland senior forward Justin Libertowski, however, tied the game in the 16th minute with his first tally since Nov. 11, 2019. The helper came from senior midfielder Keagan Brown, his first point as an Eagle.
- The first 45 minutes ended at 1-1, and there were a few dichotomies in the team stats – Indy outshot the Eagles 14-4 and had a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks, while AU out-fouled the Greyhounds, 10-1.
- Libertowski recorded a brace in the 62nd minute to give Ashland the lead, with sophomore midfielder Rafael Pereira picking up his first assist of the young campaign.
- Indy's barrage of shots eventually paid dividends. In the 85th minute, Makel Rasheed scored on an assist from Michael Tselios to re-tie the score at 2-2. Then, in the 87th minute, Alejandro Steinwascher put the Greyhounds ahead with an unassisted goal.
- The final shot differential was 27-6 in favor of the Greyhounds, while Indy had 14 of the game's 16 corner kicks. Ashland had 19 of the contest's 26 fouls.
- Junior goalkeeper Brett Robinson faced all those UIndy shots, making eight saves in the defeat.
