In a hard-fought Great Midwest Athletic Conference opener on Thursday (Sept. 16) night at Ferguson Field, Ashland University's men's soccer team moved to 0-2-2 overall and 0-0-1 in the league after a scoreless draw against Tiffin.
"We gave ourselves a good chance to win tonight," said Ashland head coach
Nick Roberts. "Honestly, it could have gone either way. It's that stage of the season, you're still figuring things out.
"It was a good result for us. We're undefeated at home after three road games."
The Dragons are 1-2-1, 0-0-1.
WHAT HAPPENED
- The first half featured plenty of midfield play and defense, as the Dragons had a narrow 5-4 lead in shots in the scoreless first 45 minutes.
- Both teams had their chances in the second half and both overtime periods, but, in the end, none of the 31 shots (Tiffin, 17-14) found the back of the net.
- Ashland junior goalkeeper Brett Robinson earned his first clean sheet of the fall thanks to six saves in his 110 minutes in the net. Robinson has played all 400 minutes this campaign, and his goals-against average dropped to 1.35.
- "We have a lot of experience in that back line," Robinson said of his backs in front of him. "The young freshman Camden (Stanzione) played incredibly well for us. He was an absolute beast. And that makes my job all the easier."
- Robinson started at the end of the 2019 season (1-2-1, 1.89, two shutouts) for the Eagles, and has earned another chance to be full-time in the net again.
- "This is a dream come true. It's the dream that I've had since I was 10," Robinson said. "This is a highlight game for me. This is a moment I think I will keep with me forever."
- Said Roberts, "He's doing great. Like anybody, your chance comes along, you take it, and that's what he's doing."
