The Ashland University volleyball team turned in one its best all-around performances of the season, winning in the first round of the GLIAC Tournament, 25-15, 25-20, 25-19, over Purdue Northwest on Friday (April 9) afternoon in University Center, Mich.
The No. 6-seed Eagles advanced to play No. 3-seed Grand Valley State at 7 p.m. on Friday.
In Friday's opener, the Eagles (9-6) had no trouble putting away Purdue Northwest (0-13), which came in as the tournament's No. 11 seed.
The Eagles hit .298 as a team and committed just one hitting error in the first set to set the tone. They finished with 46 kills in the match and had eight blocks, their most since posting nine in the season opener against Davenport.
Junior
Erin Krupar, the reigning GLIAC South Player of the Week, led the Eagles offensively with 18 kills (.343) to go with 13 digs. Senior
Brooke Peiffer totaled 10 kills (.229), 13 digs and five blocks. Junior
Heidi Fausze had nine kills (.389).
Senior
Courtney Rosebrook registered a season-high six blocks and had four kills (.364) without a hitting error.
Junior setter
Zoey Peck had a double-double with 37 assists and 10 digs and freshman libero
Katie Thompson had 17 digs in three sets.
Erica Brohm led the Pride with 12 kills (.391), but the Eagles held Purdue Northwest to a .107 hitting percentage. No other PNW player had more than six kills.
The Eagles and Lakers will play at 7 p.m. Friday in the quarterfinal round of the GLIAC Tournament. Grand Valley State won both regular season meetings between the teams at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.
