The Ashland University baseball team was held scoreless through five innings on Friday (April 30), but the offense lit up the scoreboard for 11 runs over the next three innings as the Eagles dispatched host Parkside, 11-3, in Kenosha, Wis.
The game started a four-game series between the teams as Ashland (16-12, 11-6 GLIAC) looks to climb in the GLIAC standings after entering the weekend in a tie for second place.
Parkside (2-18, 2-11 GLIAC) scored the first two runs of the game in the third and fourth innings off freshman starter
Justin Dyksma, who earned his first collegiate win.
After recording just three hits over the first five innings off Parkside starter Aaron Cusimano, the Eagles scored five runs on five hits and two Parkside errors in the sixth.
Sophomore
Seth Schroeder started the scoring with an RBI single up the middle and senior
Carson Mittermaier delivered the game-tying sac fly. Juniors
Micah Allen and
Logan Stoldt followed with RBI singles to give the Eagles a 5-2 lead.
Senior
Garett Robberts and Mittermaier hit back-to-back homers in the seventh – Robberts' a three-run shot – to make it 9-2. Junior
Dillan Smith added an RBI double later in the inning.
Robberts' RBI double to left in the eighth closed the scoring.
Dyksma (1-2) went six innings and gave up just two runs on five hits while striking out three and walking four. Junior
Alex Bish pitched the seventh inning and freshman
Isaiah Seidel retired all six batters he faced to finish the game.
Allen led the offense by reaching all five times, going 4-for-4 with a walk, two runs and an RBI. Robberts was 3-for-5 with a homer, a double and four RBI.
The Eagles and Rangers will play two games on Saturday (May 1) starting at 3 p.m. ET in Kenosha, Wis.
