The Ashland University lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaker on Sunday (April 18) afternoon, falling to host Ursuline, 12-11, in overtime.
The teams have played three games in their short history and two of them have needed overtime to find a winner.
On Sunday, the teams were tied on nine occasions and the game saw four lead changes, the last one dooming the Eagles (1-10), who held an 11-10 lead with 3:39 remaining on a goal by sophomore
Natalie Sonntag.
Grace London scored for the Arrows a minute later and the game went into overtime tied at 11.
An Eagles' penalty early in the overtime put them down a man and Madi Mamoone took advantage by scoring the sudden victory winner.
The Arrows had an 8-5 lead after scoring the first two goals of the second half, but the Eagles rattled off the next four goals – three by senior
Ashley Merritt – to take a 9-8 lead.
After Ursuline (2-5) tied it in a man-up situation, freshman
Emily Jewell gave Ashland a 10-9 lead with 13:58 to play. Jaclyn Gilmore tied it again at 10 with 10:57 to play before both teams went scoreless over the next seven-plus minutes.
Ashland struggled in man-up situations as the Eagles were unable to take advantage of all six of those opportunities.
Jewell and Merritt had three goals apiece to lead the Eagles while Sonntag added two. Junior
Kristen Ogle, sophomore
Cora Wilson and freshman
Cassady Becker had a goal apiece.
The Eagles had a 17-7 edge in draw controls and both teams had 30 shots. Freshman
Jillian Rekulak made 14 saves while Ursuline's Emily Hall stopped 16 shots.
The Eagles will now return to Ferguson Field for their final two games of the regular season – both against Grand Valley State. The Eagles and Lakers will first play on Friday (April 23) at 7 p.m.
