The Ashland University lacrosse team opened GLIAC play on Friday (March 19) night, but lost to host Concordia-St. Paul, 16-6, in Minnesota.
The Bears (2-1, 1-0 GLIAC) scored the game's first four goals and never trailed as the Eagles (1-2, 0-1 GLIAC) were not able to get out of their early hole.
Ashland settled in as the game went on, giving up just five goals in the second half, but Concordia-St. Paul kept the Eagles' attack at bay.
Senior
Ashley Merritt scored the first goal for Ashland seven minutes into the contest and freshman
Madie Gash and sophomore
Natalie Sonntag also scored in the first half, but the Eagles trailed, 11-3, at the break.
Freshman
Cassady Becker scored her second goal of the season in a man-up situation seven minutes into the second half. Sonntag scored two in a row late in the second to give her nine goals on the season.
Katie Moynihan led the Bears with four goals while Sara McNicoll added three.
Freshman
Jillian Rekulak made 11 saves for the Eagles and Maddy Huebner stopped four shots for the Bears and picked up the win.
The Eagles and Bears will complete their two-game series on Sunday at noon ET.
