The Ashland University volleyball team dropped a 25-21, 25-23, 25-21 decision to host Grand Valley State on Friday (March 19) night in Allendale, Mich.
The Eagles (6-3, 6-3 GLIAC) hit .130 in the match while the Lakers (7-2, 7-2 GLIAC) hit at a .223 clip.
Set 1 was tied at 18 after a double block by seniors
Lexi Lombardo and
Brooke Peiffer, but Grand Valley wound up finishing the frame on a 4-1 run to take it.
The Eagles led the second set by a 17-15 margin after junior
Erin Krupar and senior
Courtney Rosebrook combined on a block and it was still tied at 18 when that duo made another block, but GVSU scored the next two to take a 20-18 lead.
The Eagles battled back and went on a 3-0 run to take a 22-21 lead. Peiffer's kill broke a 22-22 tie, but the Lakers scored the next three to push the Eagles behind two sets to none.
The third set was tied at 15, but Ashland never had the lead after that point as the Lakers closesd out the match.
Peiffer led the Eagles with 11 kills (.071) while junior
Heidi Fausze added eight kills (.179).
Junior
Zoey Peck racked up 27 assists and 12 digs while freshman
Katie Thompson compiled 25 digs in just three sets.
Ali Thompson led the Lakers with 19 kills (.320) and Rachel Jacquay had 45 assists and 17 digs.
The Eagles and Lakers will play again on Saturday (March 20) at 4 p.m. at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.
