Both of Ashland University's tennis teams opened 2021 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Friday (March 19) at Grand Valley State, with the Eagle men losing, 5-2, and the women losing, 7-0.
In the men's match, Ashland's singles wins came at No. 1 from junior
Stuart Brdicka (6-2, 5-7, 6-4), and at No. 2 from senior
Priyank Soni (6-3, 6-4). Despite the Lakers taking the doubles point, the No. 1 team of Brdicka and Soni took a 6-4 decision there, as well.
Grand Valley State's women are ranked in a tie for 20th in NCAA Division II.
"I really liked how we fought and how we played. We never gave up," said Ashland Director of Tennis Operations
Tim Dunford about the women's match. "I thought we played pretty well. On the men's side, we played really good in spots, especially at the top of the lineup. Stu played incredibly, especially in that third set. At No. 1 doubles, that was a great win for them."
Ashland's men (3-3 overall, 0-1 GLIAC) and women (2-2 overall, 0-1 GLIAC) will return to the courts on Saturday (March 20) at Ferris State – the women playing at 9:30 a.m., and the men at 2 p.m.
