In the end, it was just another day at the office on Friday (Nov. 12) afternoon for Ashland University's women's basketball team.
The No 8-ranked Eagles opened the 2021-22 season on Friday at Sherrill Hudson Court at Kates Gymnasium with an 88-53 win over regional rival Lindenwood. In doing so, Ashland shot 59.3 percent from the field and 86.4 percent from the free-throw line, had 20 assists and forced 24 turnovers.
"I loved our team's effort from start to finish," said Ashland head coach
Kari Pickens. "I thought that we dominated our identity points at both ends of the floor. I couldn't have been prouder of the girls and everything they did today."
WHAT HAPPENED
- Picking up where she left off in late winter, junior forward Annie Roshak scored a game-high 29 points on 11-of-17 shooting from the field and 6-of-6 from the free-throw line. In the last seven games dating back to the end of 2020-21, Roshak is averaging 24.6 points per outing.
- Next in the scoring column was sophomore Macy Spielman, who came off the bench to score 19 points in her first game as an Eagle. Spielman was 11-of-12 from the foul line.
- Senior guard Hallie Heidemann rounded out three AU players in double-digit scoring with 10 points, while adding six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
- "Hallie is an outstanding rebounder. Was in high school, and it's definitely translated to the college level," Pickens said.
- In addition to Spielman, another newcomer, freshman point guard Morgan Yoder, started and had five points and a team-high six assists in 25 minutes.
- "We knew coming in that they had a ton of potential to really impact this team positively pretty immediately, and I thought they showed that today," Pickens said of the newbies.
- The Eagles scored 32 points off Lions turnovers, and kept Lindenwood to 39.3 percent from the field and 2-of-12 from downtown.
- "The way we played today, we played to our identity," Heidemann said. "We did what we practice. The more we do that, the better we're going to be."
