Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 8 AU Women Start 2-0 After Home Win Over Indy

Overcoming a scoreless streak of more than eight minutes in the fourth quarter, the No. 8-ranked Ashland University women's basketball team outlasted Indianapolis, 59-45, on Saturday (Nov. 13) night at the Sherrill Hudson Court at Kates Gymnasium.

"I liked that we won," said Ashland head coach Kari Pickens. "I liked that we, while it was a really ugly basketball game, somehow found a way to win, and we're going to be able to learn a lot and grow a lot from this game.

"I'm proud that we held good team to 45 points and forced 33 turnovers. That was pretty much the highlight from the game. We did not play Ashland basketball."

The Eagles are 2-0 on the young season, while the Greyhounds are 0-2.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Defense was Ashland's calling card on Saturday, as the 33 turnovers it forced were the most in a game since pilfering 34 at home against Lake Superior State on Feb. 8, 2018.
  • The 59 points scored are the fewest in an Eagle victory since Feb. 20, 2014, a 53-50 decision at Ohio Dominican, while the 45 points allowed are the fewest since yielding 41 against Purdue Northwest earlier this year on March 2.
  • "I was very, very thankful that we were able to put it together on one end of the court," Pickens said. "The only problem is, championship teams put it together on both ends of the court, game in and game out."
  • Junior forward Annie Roshak led all scorers with 20 points, while senior guard Hallie Heidemann added 13 points.
  • Ashland made just 35.7 percent from the field and 23.8 percent from the 3-point line, but did go 14-for-17 from the free-throw line. The Greyhounds, however, were kept to 41.5 percent from the field and 15.4 percent from downtown.
