October is Ashland University's men's soccer team's time to make up some ground.
On Saturday (Oct. 2) night at Malone, the Eagles earned their first win of the 2021 fall season, 3-1, over the Pioneers. AU is 1-4-3 overall and 1-2-2 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, while Malone is 0-10-0, 0-6-0.
"It's been a long time coming," said Ashland head coach
Nick Roberts. "It's a bit like in the spring…we didn't start very well. We've been close in a lot of games and just haven't been able to push it over the line. Today, we got that done, which is good."
In the last two fall seasons (the 2020 fall campaign was moved to the spring of 2021), Ashland turned slow starts into late-season comebacks. The 2019 season saw a 4-2-1 October mark after a 1-6-0 start, and in 2018, a 4-3-2 October was better than a 2-6-1 mark through nine games.
WHAT HAPPENED
- In the 33rd minute, senior forward Haruki Kimura scored on a 20-yard free kick for not only a 1-0 AU lead, but his first goal of the season. The scoreboard stayed the same until the 66th minute, when the Eagles took a 2-0 lead on a header from senior forward Brandon Davidson. His second goal of the fall came from a cross and the second assist of the fall by sophomore midfielder Rafael Pereira.
- Less than three minutes later, in the 69th minute, however, the Pioneers cut their deficit in half on a tally from Gavin Csiszar. Ashland had the answer in the 76th minute, when Davidson collected his second goal of the game on a feed from senior midfielder Keagan Brown, his second assist of the season.
- "He's a goal-scorer," Roberts said of Davidson. "He got two today, and it was great. It was what we needed."
- Davidson said, "It felt alright. It was a very, very scrappy game. I had really good service on both my goals. I just took my chances."
- Ashland out-shot Malone, 20-10. Junior goalkeeper Brett Robinson only saw one shot on goal in earning his first win of the season.
