AU Women Keep Pace Atop Great Midwest After Home Victory

Following a dominating second 45 minutes at Ferguson Field on Thursday (Oct. 14) night, Ashland University's women's soccer team remains tied atop the Great Midwest Athletic Conference table heading into next week.

A 5-1 victory at home on Thursday over Kentucky Wesleyan was the Eagles' sixth in a row, and puts them at 9-1-2 overall and 8-0-1 in the Great Midwest. The Panthers are 3-8-0, 0-7-0.

Following a 1-1 tie in the first 45 minutes, Ashland ran off four goals in the second half.

"In the first half, we got comfortable and we settled a little bit," said Ashland head coach Cayleb Paulino. "We've been talking all week about not settling and taking shots outside the 18. The one shot we got inside the 18 (in the first half) went into the back of the net.

"The second half was the complete opposite."

WHAT HAPPENED
  • In the 10th minute, junior forward Bailey Clark scored on a tic-tac-toe goal. Clark's tally was her third of the season, and the assists went to senior midfielder Hannah Mueller (fourth assist) and freshman forward McKinley Mendenhall (first of 2021).
  • The Panthers knotted the game in the 22nd minute when Natalie Hinchcliffe scored on a pass from Chloe Hinchcliffe. Ashland and KWC were tied at the break despite a wide disparity in shots (25-4).
  • Clark potted her second goal of the game, and fourth of the fall, in the 50th minute on a header following a cross from senior forward Bri Fourman, for her third assist of the campaign.
  • "It was really important to see a variety of different people get on the board tonight, and being able to put five of them was big," Clark said. "It sends a message for the group. This is a great group of people. It's amazing to see the program, how far it's come."
  • Senior defender Tori Baker then got into the scoring act, as her header off the Mueller corner kick lifted AU to a 3-1 advantage. Baker's goal was her fourth of the season, and Mueller's assist was her second of the game and team-high fifth of the campaign.
  • In the 72nd and 74th minutes, freshman midfielder Merrik Mihalek recorded the first two goals of her AU career, both unassisted, to move the Eagle lead to 5-1.
  • With Mihalek's two goals, 10 different Eagles have scored at least one goal this fall.
  • "For us, it's making the most of your opportunity," Paulino said. "Players are stepping up in big moments when we need them. Merrik got on the score sheet tonight. This was her best game of the year, and she was super dangerous. Getting Bailey back on the scoresheet was huge for us."
  • Ashland took 43 shots to KWC's 14. Junior goalkeeper Bri Rogers is 9-0-1 on the season following a pair of saves on Thursday.
