Continuing play on Saturday (Feb. 22) at Lewis' Dome Invitational, Ashland University's softball team topped Illinois Springfield, a 2019 NCAA Division II postseason team, 6-5, then lost to Lindenwood, 2-0.
In Saturday's first game, the Eagles (1-3) earned their first win of 2020 thanks to a two-run bottom of the sixth inning which saw freshman left fielder Lauren McMillin score on a wild pitch, then freshman first baseman Cat Lohse bring in the game-winning run on a bases-loaded walk.
Those runs came after McMillin's diving catch to start the top of the sixth, which preceded a pair of Prairie Star walks.
Senior second baseman Camille Pollutro and senior designated player Bree Gill each had two of AU's six hits in the victory. Gill drove in two runs, while Pollutro scored three times.
Earning her first collegiate win in the pitcher's circle was freshman Regan Ware (1-1), who scattered seven hits, five runs and five walks and struck out one in the complete game.
Against Lindenwood, freshman pitcher Josie Duncan kept the Eagles in the contest throughout, allowing four hits, two runs and four walks and striking out one in six innings. Ashland, however, could muster only one hit, a McMillin single.
Ashland will return to action to begin its annual Florida trip on March 8 against Lake Erie (10 a.m.) and Southern New Hampshire (12:15 p.m.).
