Ashland University's men's tennis team opened its season with two wins on Saturday (Feb. 1).
The Eagles topped Carnegie Mellon, 4-3, and Oberlin, 4-3.
Ashland's win against the No. 14 team in division III, Carnegie Mellon, came down to a one-match decision.
The Eagles won two doubles matches to earn the initial point. Sophomore Stuart Brdicka and sophomore Jordan Phelps won their No. 1 doubles match, 6-2. At No. 2 doubles, sophomore Tche Kun Teng and freshman Hung Huynh were victorious in a 6-3 match.
In singles play, senior Priyank Soni won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4 in No. 2 singles play. Brdicka won by retirement of his opponent. Phelps' win clinched the Eagles' victory in their first match of the season as he won two close sets, 6-4, 7-5.
In the later match, the Eagles saw continued success against Oberlin. The No. 1 doubles duo of Phelps and Brdicka won their match, 6-2. In No. 3 doubles, Soni and freshman Jacob Hoffman won a close one, 7-6.
Brdicka won his singles match at No. 1 in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Phelps also won in just two sets, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4. Soni was the last of the Eagles to win and clinched the victory in the match with his 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles.
Next up for the Eagles is a home match against Walsh on Sunday (Feb. 2) at 4 p.m.
