Swihart's Overtime Golden Goal Lifts Eagles To 4-3 Victory

Box Score

Senior forward Deijah Swihart scored the game-winner in overtime as the Ashland University women's soccer team knocked off host Ohio Dominican, 4-3, on Sunday (Sept. 15) afternoon in Columbus.

The Eagles (3-1) showed their prowess in the attacking third in a wild affair that featured 27 shots (Ohio Dominican led, 14-13), 30 fouls (ODU, 19-11) and five yellow cards (ODU, 4-1).

It was the most combined goals in an AU game in which both teams scored since the Eagles beat Ferris State, 4-3, in the 2015 GLIAC Tournament semifinal.

The Eagles had a 3-1 lead in the 63rd minute after the first goal of the season by senior Emily Ledbetter, who scored off a pass by junior Nadya Boualany.

Ohio Dominican (2-2), which came into the week receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches national poll, scored twice in the span of 26 seconds in the 73rd minute to tie the game.

It went into overtime knotted at 3.

The Eagles took advantage of their only shot in the period as they won a clearance in the midfield and found sophomore Faith Lewis, who carried the ball into the box.

She then slipped a pass to Swihart, who tapped in at the back post to send the Eagles to the win in their third road game of the week.

"Our midfield did a great job all game of winning balls and keeping us in the attack," said Ashland's second-year head coach Taylor Clarke. "Faith was able to drive at the defense and had the option of shooting or slipping a pass, and she found Deijah to tap it in."

The Eagles went ahead early in the game as sophomore Makenzie Kelly scored for the second time this season in the 11th minute.

The Panthers equalized through Samantha Buck just five minutes later, but Lewis gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead just 90 seconds before halftime on an unassisted goal.

The Eagles will have three days off before returning to the Ferugson Field turf on Thursday (Sept. 19) at 1 p.m. to take on Trevecca Nazarene.
