It's on to championship meet week for Ashland University's men's and women's indoor track and field teams following Saturday's (Feb. 16) Kent State Tune-Up.
Kent State finished the No. 2-ranked Eagle men's and No. 9-ranked Eagle women's 2018-19 regular season, and what awaits is the 2019 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships, Feb. 23-24 at Saginaw Valley State.
On Saturday, however, a pair of AU women's throwers improved upon their previous provisional marks in the weight throw for 2019 NCAA Division II nationals, March 8-9 at Pittsburg State (Kan.). Senior Mackenzie Leigh won the event with a top mark of 19.02 meters/62-feet-5, while sophomore Gianna DiPippo was fourth at 18.12 meters/59-feet-5½.
Also winning on Saturday was junior Ellie Jindra in the women's high jump at 1.63 meters/5-feet-4¼.
Runner-up placements were earned by senior Natalie Helenthal in the women's weight throw (18.87 meters/61-feet-11), junior Alex Hill in the men's weight throw (21.33 meters/69-feet-11¾), sophomore Ian Johnson in the men's 800-meter run (1:53.86), sophomore Danny Friebel in the men's 1,000 run (2:33.48), junior Jacob Bon in the men's long jump (7.08 meters/23-feet-2¾), and sophomore Gabrielle Ewing in the women's pole vault unseeded (3.40 meters/11-feet-1¾).
Finishing third were redshirt freshman Lindsay Baker in the women's weight throw (18.12 meters/59-feet-5½), junior Paula Wollenslegel in the women's high jump (1.58 meters/5-feet-2¼), freshman Storm Elsesser in the men's high jump (1.94 meters/6-feet-4¼), freshman Ethan Tabor in the men's long jump (7.01 meters/23-feet-0), and sophomore Miyuki Sugiyama in the women's triple jump (11.79 meters/38-feet-8¼).
