No. 13 AU Wins At Ferris State, Stays Unbeaten

Box Score

Ashland University's women's basketball team used a 15-0 second-half run to finish off a 2-0 Michigan road trip with a 64-44 win over Ferris State on Saturday (Dec. 5) at Big Rapids High School in Big Rapids, Mich.

The No. 13-ranked Eagles improve to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, are the last remaining undefeated team in the league and are tied with Ohio Dominican and Findlay for first place in the GLIAC South Division.

The Bulldogs are 0-6, 0-2.

For the second consecutive game, senior guard McKenzie Miller paced the Eagle offense, posting 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the 3-point line and adding five assists. Sophomore forward Laina Snyder added 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds, while sophomore forward Andi Daugherty added 11 points to go past the 500-point mark (504) for her young AU career.

The Eagles kept the Bulldogs to 38.6-percent shooting from the field and just 1-of-9 from the 3-point arc. Ashland also forced 28 FSU turnovers, which resulted in 34 points.

Ashland trailed 9-6 before going on an 11-0 run to take a 17-9 lead with two minutes remaining in the first quarter. The Eagles led after the first 10 minutes, 20-13.

AU led 31-17 with 6:24 left in the second quarter, and the score stayed that way for almost three minutes. The Eagles didn't score for a stretch of 5:37 in the second, but still led the Bulldogs at the break, 35-23.

Another Ashland scoreless stretch, this one for the first 6:08 of the third quarter, moved Ferris State to within a point at 35-34. Back-to-back Miller triples, however, lifted AU to a 44-36 lead going into the fourth quarter. The Eagles led 38-36 late in the third quarter, but their 15-0 run put the game out of reach.

Ashland will play its GLIAC home opener on Wednesday (Dec. 9) at 5:30 p.m. against Hillsdale (4-2, 1-1). It will be Youth Basketball Night/Christmas at Kates/Canned Food Drive at Kates Gymnasium.

EAGLE NUGGETS: The Eagles have started at least 6-0 for the first time since their 2012-13 national championship season, when they began 24-0…Ashland is 26-9 (.743) in its last 35 games in the state of Michigan…Snyder, Daugherty and/or fellow sophomore forward Julie Worley have led the team in rebounding in each of the 40 games of their Eagle careers.
