Box Score The Ashland University women's soccer team knew the challenge at hand in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship game against the No. 1-ranked Grand Valley State Lakers.
The Lakers came in with an 18-1-0 record, and Eagles began the game playing well to keep them off the scoreboard. In a high intensity defensive battle, it wasn't until the 39th minute when GVSU finally broke through and found net.
The Eagles trailed 1-0 at halftime and had hopes to get that goal back after halftime. The Lakers had other plans though, and a barrage of second-half goals sealed the game 5-0 in favor of GVSU.
The Eagles finish the tournament as the 2015 GLIAC runners-up, as they did in 2011, when the Lakers beat AU, 2-0.
Ashland has three members of the 2015 GLIAC Women's Soccer All-Tournament Team - sophomores Courtney Barker (goalkeeper) and Morgan Bittengle (forward) and freshman forward Deijah Swihart.
AU will now sit and wait to see if they have done enough to appease the NCAA selection committee. The committee decides which 48 teams that will make up the NCAA Division II tournament bracket. The top six teams in each of the eight NCAA regions make the field. Ashland will know its fate on Monday (Nov. 9) at 6:30 p.m.
The Eagles sit with a 14-4-1 record under head coach Danny Krispinsky, their best mark since 2004 (19-2-1).
