Eagles Can't Slow Down Nationally Ranked Lakers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Ashland University softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader Sunday (Mar. 24) at Brookside Park against 17th-ranked Grand Valley State. The Lakers won the first game, 10-5 and completed the sweep with a 6-4 triumph in the nightcap.

A year ago, both of these teams advanced to the NCAA Division II playoffs.

Ashland is 8-11 and 2-2 in GLIAC action. This is the opening weekend of conference play. On Saturday, the Eagles took two games from Ferris State.

In Sunday's first game, AU led, 3-1 after one inning. The Lakers (14-2/4-0 GLIAC) wiped out that deficit by scoring five times in the second inning and three times in the third and led, 9-3 after three frames.

AU starter McKenna Galloway (Brunswick, Ohio) lasted 1.1 innings. The loss left her with a 1-5 record. GVSU's Emily Jones was 2-4 with three RBI and Brittany Taylor had a double and two RBI. Emily Holt rapped a homer. The Eagles gave the Lakers plenty of help by committing six errors.

Ashland was paced by center fielder Taylor Menhart (Twinsburg, Ohio), who went 3-for-4. Outfielder Kourtney Yarnall (Canton, Ohio/Perry) was 2-for-4 and designated player Jen Moore (Jeromesville, Ohio/Hillsdale) continued a torrid weekend by going 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBI.

Hannah Santoro raised her record to 8-0 with a complete game victory. AU got to her for eight hits.  Santoro walked four and struck out two.

In the second game, GVSU led, 4-1 after one inning and 6-1 after four innings. The Eagles managed five hits off of Sara Andrasik. Two of those hits were by Moore. Andrasik went the distance and allowed only one earned run. She walked three and struck out five.

Sarah Alley (Milford, Ohio) was saddled with the loss. She gave up six runs on eight hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Alley is 6-4.

AU is scheduled to play a non-conference doubleheader at Urbana on Tuesday (Mar. 26).
