Box Score If this 2013 Ashland University volleyball team really believes it needs a theme, it might want to consider the simple call that radio operators have used for years - "Over and Out."
The Eagles are at their best when they play fast and furious, building an early lead. That short-and-to-the-point formula was on display again on Friday (Oct. 4) at Kates Gymnasium where the Eagles dispatched Lake Superior State, 3-0.
The Eagles swept the Lakers, 25-8, 25-15, 25-22. Ashland is 11-3, 5-1 in GLIAC play. AU has a three-match winning streak and will host Saginaw Valley State on Saturday (Oct. 5, 2 p.m.).
On this night, the Eagles received 12 kills from Baley Bernthisel and 11 kills and seven digs from Alli Cudworth. Megan Rohlfs had 11 digs. Shelly DeHenning had 32 assists and four service aces.
Emily Snyder led the Lakers (0-10/0-6) with five kills. Meghan Drobish contributed 11 digs.
In the first set, the Eagles had a .476 hitting percentage and set the tone for the evening, racing out to a 10-3 lead. Ashland's most challenging part of the evening came in the third set. The stubborn Lakers didn't go down without a fight. The Lakers had an 18-16 lead before AU scored four consecutive points to go in front, 20-18. Bernthisel had the last two kills in that run.
The teams were knotted at 21-21 when AU got kills from Casey Clark and Samantha Zuber to take a 23-21 lead. An attack error by the Lakers made the score 24-21 and that was too much for the Lakers to overcome.
