No Letdown For Eagles Against Grand Canyon

Against the Ashland University women's basketball team, Grand Canyon experienced no peaks and one long, deep valley.

The Eagles, ranked first in the country, pummeled Arizona school, 83-55 on Sunday (Nov. 11) at the Disney Classic in Anaheim, Calif. Ashland leaves California with a 3-0 record. This was AU's second victory over a ranked foe. Grand Canyon had a rough start at the Disney Classic, finishing the three-day event with a 1-2 card.

Playing against the Eagles is no way to get back on track.  With the game tied, 4-4, the Eagles went on a 9-0 run to take a 13-4 lead with 14:17 left before the intermission.  At halftime, AU was ahead, 43-19. In the first half, the Eagles outrebounded Grand Canyon, 24-14.  Grand Canyon shot 26.7 percent (8-of-30) from the floor over those first 20 minutes.

Senior forward Kari Daugherty (Fresno, Ohio/Dayton) and junior guard Alyssa Miller (Zanesville, Ohio/Tri-Valley) were nearly unstoppable in the first half. Daugherty, who would finish with 32 points and 16 rebounds, had 14 points and 11 rebounds at the break. For the game, she was 12-of-18 from the floor and 8-of-8 at the free throw line. This was her third consecutive double-double.

Miller scored 11 of her 12 points before halftime.

Senior guard Lindsay Tenyak (Wadsworth, Ohio) ended the game with 12 points, She was 4-for-7 from three-point range. Sophomore guard Taylor Woods (Wadsworth, Ohio) had a team-high eight assists.  Senior forward Daiva Gerbec (Dublin, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) collected eight rebounds. Junior guard Noelle Yoder (Millersburg, Ohio/Bowling Green) came off the bench to add six points. Yoder was 2-for-3 from beyond the three-point stripe.

The Eagles will play at home for the first time this season on Saturday (Nov. 17, 3 p.m.) when they host Kentucky Wesleyan.
