Box Score Prior to the start of the Grand Valley State-Ashland soccer game Sunday (Sept. 25) at Ferguson Field, an internet cable was snapped. No one at the field had a way to make any repairs.
That would not be the case with the women's soccer team from GVSU. It could be said they come to the field with a full tool box every day.
Speed, power, depth, technique, there's nothing the 14th-ranked Lakers lack. They showed that again on Sunday, defeating the Eagles, 5-0.
The loss gives AU a 3-5-1 record, 2-3-1 in the GLIAC. GVSU is 6-0-2 and 5-0-0 in league play.
The Lakers scored the only goal they would need at the 9:09 mark, Erin Mutz taking a feed from Ashley Botts and scoring from seven yards out. The lead grew to 2-0 at 19:42 when Botts scored an unassisted goal. At that point, the Eagles were hoping to get to the intermission starting at a two-goal deficit. The Lakers didn't let that happen. At 34:41, Kayla Addison scored an unassisted goal. GVSU led in shots, 10-1 after the first half.
The best plays in the second half were turned in by GVSU keeper Chelsea Parise. She had four saves on the day and made two spectacular saves after the break. AU was shut out for the second consecutive game.
The Eagles will play their next three games on the road. The first contest in that string comes next Friday (Sept. 30, 4 p.m.) at Michigan Tech.
