ASHLAND, Ohio – Going into this weekend's play, Ashland women's soccer head coach Glenn Francis knew his team would need results as it came down the final few weeks of conference play.
The Eagles (3-7-2, 2-6-2 GLIAC) nearly came up with a positive result on Friday (Oct. 15) night at Northwood, but the Timberwolves prevailed, 2-1, in overtime.
AU was on its heels early as Amanda Watson scored off her own rebound in the third minute to give Northwood a 1-0 lead. That lead would hold into the intermission.
The Eagles pounced on the equalizer in the 51st minute as freshman Deanna Gundling (Concord, Ohio/Riverside) scored off a cross to make it 1-1. The assist went to senior Ashley Dragos (Falmouth, Maine/West Virginia Wesleyan), her second of the season. The goal was Gundling's third of the season, all of them coming in the last two games.
Freshman Karly Beuck (Lodi, Ohio/Cloverleaf) held off the Timberwolves in the second half, making five saves.
Northwood (4-9-0, 2-9-0 GLIAC) came away with the sudden victory in the second minute of overtime when Heather Rhodes drew a foul in the AU box to earn a penalty kick. Alyssa Tomassi converted the penalty kick by placing the shot in the upper right corner, sending the Timberwolves to the 2-1 win.
Northwood had the advantage in shots, 14-8, while Ashland led in corner kicks, 3-2. Rebecca Lipinski stopped five shots in goal for the 'Wolves.
Ashland will return to the pitch on Sunday (Oct. 17) afternoon at Saginaw Valley State at 12 p.m. It will be the final road game this season for the Eagles, who host Ohio Dominican at 2 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 22).
