Delbert Joins Eagle Athletic Department As Faculty Athletic Representative

Ashland University's athletic department has added Jeffrey Delbert, Ph.D., as its new Faculty Athletic Representative.
 
Delbert is the Chair of the Communication Studies Department, and Assistant Professor of Communication Studies, at AU.
 
"We're delighted to welcome Jeff to the FAR role," said Al King, Ashland Director of Athletics. "Much like what Dr. Mitch Metzger did, I think Jeff will bring some new ideas and perspectives to the position. I like his energy and enthusiasm. He's eager to learn and dig into what he can do to help our student-athletes."
 
Said Delbert, "AU's focus on the individual is what enticed me to join the faculty two years ago. When considering the role of FAR, I reflected on my academic work, which has focused on communication and governance. I believe that institutions thrive when people are willing to listen as carefully as they speak. I believe that universities are strongest when all parts of the institution work to understand one another.
 
"Athletics and academics are two parts of a single mission – to educate our student-athletes. I am excited to be chosen as the liaison between the faculty and athletics, and I look forward to helping foster conversations that connect academics with athletics."
 
As FAR, Delbert works as the athletic department's liaison with the school's faculty and providing oversight of the academic integrity of the athletics program and serving as an advocate for student-athlete well-being. Questions on eligibility and NCAA rules and regulations are directed toward Delbert. He also represents the athletic department at Great Midwest Athletic Conference meetings for athletic directors, institution presidents and faculty representatives.
 
Delbert also will serve on the AU Hall of Fame Committee as part of his FAR duties.
 
He takes over for Metzger, who in June was named Ashland University's provost.
 
"I want to thank Mitch again for all of his work as a FAR," King said. "He was exceptional and he had a prominent voice in our department, on campus and in the G-MAC. He took this position to a new level and I expect Jeff to do the same."
