Baseball’s Late Offensive Explosion Leads To Second Straight Florida Win

Ten total runs in the seventh and eighth innings on Friday (March 6) night lifted Ashland University's baseball team to a 13-9 win over Saginaw Valley State in the second game of the Florida spring break trip.

The Eagles move back above the .500 mark at 6-5 with their third consecutive win and after posting a season-high run total, while the Cardinals are 9-6.

Ashland jumped on top, scoring twice in the top of the first inning on a solo home run by redshirt freshman designated hitter Drew Stevens and an RBI single from senior left fielder Billy Howard.

The Eagles extended their advantage to 3-0 in the third when Howard lifted a sacrifice fly.

Saginaw Valley, however, worked the game back to tied thanks to a run in the fourth and two in the fifth – but Ashland regained the lead in the seventh when senior third baseman Ryan Shimek hit his second home run of the spring, a three-run shot.

The Cardinals turned around, however, and scored five times in the bottom of the seventh for their first lead of the contest.

All that did, however, was set up even more back-and-forth, as the Eagles put up a seven-spot in the eighth. That was highlighted by a bases-clearing double from graduate shortstop Collin Overholt, a two-run single by senior first baseman Sam Witt, an RBI single by graduate right fielder Chris Franks, and a run-scoring single from junior catcher Nate King – all with two outs.

SVSU scored once in the eighth, but didn't get any closer.

HITTING COMING FROM ALL OVER
  • Of Ashland's 14 hits, Stevens collected three, and two each came from Overholt, Shimek, Franks and King.
  • Overholt and Shimek each drove in three runs, and Howard and Witt each added two RBIs.
  • Freshman right-handed pitcher Ben Sibert (2-0) picked up the relief win after striking out two and allowing a hit, a run and a walk in 1 2/3 innings.
  • Head coach John Schaly has 994 wins at Ashland. He is 19th in NCAA baseball history at all levels with 1,357 all-time victories.
COMING UP
The third game of the annual Florida trip on Saturday (March 7) at 6 p.m. vs. St. Cloud State (8-6).
