Women’s Basketball Loses Conference Tourney Opener At Northwood

Playing on the road in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament game for the first time in program history, Ashland University's women's basketball team lost 79-72 at Northwood in a quarterfinal on Tuesday (March 3) night.

The Eagles' season ends at 14-13, while the Timberwolves move on at 24-5.

Tuesday's first quarter was a competitive one – neither team with a lead of more than four points, both teams shooting 50 percent or better from the field, and both teams with just four turnovers. The Timberwolves led after the first 10 minutes, 20-18.

Ashland more than held their own in the first half, but still trailed by a 39-34 count. Freshman forward Jenna Slates posted 10 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals, and the Eagles made 53.6 percent from the floor, in the game's first 20 minutes.

Slates then scored the first five points of the second half, as AU tied the score at 39. When graduate guard Benedetta Dell'Orto hit a 3-point field goal, that gave the Eagles their biggest lead of the night at 46-41.

Northwood, however, ended the third period by scoring 16 of its last 20 points to take a 57-50 lead into the final stanza. The T'Wolves' biggest lead of the fourth was 12 points at 67-55.
