Baseball Takes Two From Jackets, Runs Win Streak To Eight

Head Coach John Schaly Is One Win Away From 1,000 Guiding Eagles

As Ashland University's baseball team extends its winning streak, head coach John Schaly gets closer to yet another milestone.

The Eagles began 2026 Great Midwest Athletic Conference play on Friday (March 13) with a doubleheader sweep of Cedarville, 13-3 and 8-5, at Tomassi Stadium and Donges Field at the Archer Ballpark Complex.

In doing so, Schaly moves to 999 career wins at Ashland (11-5 overall, 2-0 Great Midwest) as the Eagles' win streak reaches eight games. Schaly has 1,362 all-time wins at three coaching stops, 19th in NCAA history at all levels.

The Yellow Jackets are 6-12, 0-2.

Ashland put up crooked numbers in the bottom of the second (two), fifth (two), seventh (five) and eighth (three) innings to finish Game 1 a frame early.

Four Eagles each had two of AU's 13 hits – sophomore Sean Krueckeberg, graduate shortstop Collin Overholt, senior first baseman Sam Witt and freshman second baseman Max Albert. Albert drove in three runs.

Junior right-handed pitcher Jackson Grine (2-0), the reigning North Division pitching Athlete of the Week, gave Ashland six innings, striking out five and allowing nine hits, two runs and a walk.

In Friday's nightcap, more crooked numbers helped the Eagles to that victory. Junior catcher Nate King hit his second home run of the season, and finished 2-for-4 with five RBIs, senior left fielder Billy Howard was 2-for-4 with two doubles, and Overholt was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.

Sophomore righty Drew Becker (1-0) went the first six innings, striking out seven and yielding five hits, four runs and three walks.

COMING UP
The third and fourth games of the series at 1 p.m. on Saturday (March 14).
