A dominant first half set the stage for a convincing win in Ashland.
On Saturday, Feb. 14, the Ashland University men's basketball team played host to the Hillsdale College Chargers inside of Kates Gymnasium, downing them 80-63. The win keeps the Eagles in contention for a top spot in the conference standings.
The Eagles jumped out fast in the first half of play, shooting nearly 62% from the field heading into the break. They led 48-24, off the backs of some of the bench depth stepping up.
Early in the second half, the Chargers struggled to find a rhythm, settling for shots and falling asleep on the defensive end. They did jump the scoring up a bit, though, scoring 39 points in the second half compared to a measly 24 in the first. Despite an improved effort, the Eagles were far and away the better side.
At times, the Chargers cut the difference down to 20 points, but it very rarely ever fell below that mark. The Eagles ultimately cleared the bench and brought in plenty of reserves, giving a chance to senior Josh Hotz to play on senior night.
They charged forward down the stretch and closed out the 17-point win.
Senior Maceo Williams paced the team with 17 points and 12 rebounds, recording a double-double, while his counterpart, sophomore Jason Moore added 16 points and six boards. Redshirt freshman Max Dawson also added on 15 points off the bench, knocking down three shots from deep range.
The team finished the game shooting 57.6% from the field and outscored the Chargers by an outstanding 56-22 mark in the paint. Ashland also led the rebounding category, 33-23, and forced 14 turnovers, turning those into 18 points.
The win improved Ashland to 18-7 overall on the season and 15-2 in conference play, while the Chargers dropped to 9-15 on the year and 6-10 in the conference.
Up next, the Eagles are preparing for a road contest against the Malone Pioneers on Thursday, Feb. 19, with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m. EST.
