A split day results in the Eagles falling, 2-1, in the season series against Frostburg State.
After falling on Friday, Feb. 13, in a walk-off loss in the bottom of the ninth, the Ashland University baseball team responded well in the first game of Saturday's meetings. It was a high-scoring affair, 12-10, with the Eagles coming out on top. However, following that game, the Eagles fell yet again in a ninth-inning comeback for the Bobcats.
In the first game of the day, the Eagles built an early comeback after surrendering five quick runs in the top of the first. Immediately, they then added five of their own to set the tone of a high-scoring matchup.
Frostburg reclaimed the lead back in the fourth with four runs, highlighted by a two-run home run, but the Eagles responded yet again, trimming the deficit on an RBI double later in the inning from Sam Witt.
Heading into the sixth inning, the scoreline favored the Bobcats, 12-8.
The turning point came in the sixth. Witt led off the inning with a solo home run to bring the Eagles within one, and after a walk and a stolen base put runners in scoring position, Ryan Shimek blasted a three-run home run to give the Eagles a 12-0 lead they wouldn't lose.
On the mound, the win was given to Ben Sibert, who allowed just one hit and struck out three batters in two late innings of work.
In game two, the Eagles fell down 2-0 early, before Billy Howard tied the game with a two-run single into right field in the third inning. With a bit of momentum, they added two more on from a Chris Franks home run.
In the fifth, the Eagles maintained a 4-2 lead, with another Franks RBI on a single, bringing Colton Hunt home for a three-run advantage.
But unfortunately, the game wouldn't end up dropping the way of Ashland.
Frostburg State chipped away at the deficit with a solo home run in the sixth and an RBI double in the eighth, before a ninth-inning surge paved the way for the comeback win.
The loss drops the Eagles to 2-4 on the campaign as they'll look to bounce back in due time. The next time they take the field will be on Saturday, Feb. 28, as they take on the Charleston Golden Eagles for a doubleheader beginning at noon EST.
