Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Dusty Sloan, Ashland University Director of Athletic Communications

Woodward Brace, Clean Sheet Get AU Men Back In G-MAC Tourney Picture

Ashland University head men's soccer coach Nick Roberts doesn't believe in his Eagles having a special ability to win once the calendar turns to October.

But there's no denying the results so far this season and in this decade. AU has gone to 2-0 in the year's 10th month in 2026 following a 2-0 win over Northwood on Thursday (Oct. 8) night at Ferguson Field. The Eagles, with their third win in the last four outings, improve to 5-6 overall and 4-4 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference – one point out of the sixth and final conference tournament spot.

"Doesn't mean anything," Roberts said of the October angle. "That was a hard night. That was a hard game. We needed one of those. We needed a win like that.

"It is that time of year you start to figure out how to play, and it's taken us some time to do that."

Since the start of the 2021 season, Ashland men's soccer plays at a .602 clip (24-15-5) in October, and at .378 (15-27-7) in August and September.

Following a scoreless first 77 minutes, sophomore forward Tom Woodward snuck his seventh goal of 2026 under and through the Northwood defense. Assists went to freshman midfielder Cole Fisher and sophomore midfielder Hayden Clark – both their second of the season.

Woodward then capped the victory with his second goal of the night – and conference-leading eighth of the season – in the 89th minute, unassisted. Thursday marked Woodward's third multi-goal game of 2026.

"The first goal was superb," Roberts noted. "He really pulled that one out of his back pocket. We needed that then, because we were under a lot of pressure."

Said Woodward, "We had a tough start. We knew we've just got to be patient, and the wins would come. Keep getting better every game."

Junior goalkeeper Jaime Duran needed just one save to record his fifth shutout of the season. Northwood (2-8-1, 2-6) out-shot AU, 15-9, and had a 10-6 corner kicks advantage.

Ashland is 6-1-1 in the last eight meetings with Northwood.

The Eagles will return to Great Midwest play on Saturday (Oct. 10) at 7 p.m. at Lake Erie (6-4-3, 5-2-2).
