For the second time in three days, Ashland University's men's basketball team never trailed – and on Saturday (Jan. 31) afternoon, the Eagles won at Northwood, 81-63.
Ashland finished a successful January at 7-2, and goes into February at 15-6 overall and 9-4 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. The Eagles continue to be two games behind first-place Walsh in the league standings.
Senior forward
Maceo Williams turned in one of his best all-around games as an Eagle on Saturday, and became Ashland's fourth-leading all-time scorer in the process. In 37 minutes, Williams posted 26 points, 13 rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks, while going 10-of-16 from the field.
Williams now has 1,762 career points – passing
Bill Higgins into fourth place on AU's all-time scoring list.
It was an early pattern – two points for Ashland, missed shot or turnover for Northwood (13-8, 7-6). The Eagles used that to score the game's first 10 points, but the Timberwolves worked their early deficit down to four points at 12-8.
Redshirt freshman guard
Max Dawson's 3-point field goal prior to the under-12 media timeout put AU on top, 22-13. Then another Dawson triple gave his team a new largest lead to that point at 33-21.
Ashland ultimately took a 41-26 lead into the locker room, and mainly because of an efficient offense – 53.8 percent from the floor, 3-for-7 from 3-point range, and an impressive 10-of-10 from the free-throw line.
The Eagles then did something difficult to do on the road in the Great Midwest – pull away in the second half, leading by as many as 27 points.
OFFENSIVELY STRONG ONCE AGAIN
- Shooting 55.6 percent from the floor, Ashland made at least 55 percent for the eighth time in 2025-26.
- Joining Williams in double-digit scoring were sophomore forward Jason Moore (13 points), Dawson (11) and junior wing Cooper Davis (10).
- The Eagles kept the Timberwolves to 3-of-20 shooting from behind the arc, and 37.9 percent overall.
