A lengthy fourth-quarter run by Hillsdale resulted in a 53-52 loss for Ashland University's women's basketball team on the road on Saturday (Jan. 24) afternoon.
The Eagles saw their six-game winning streak snapped, and they are 11-6 overall and 7-4 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.
Eight straight Charger (9-7, 5-5) points put them up 8-2 early. Ashland survived a slow offensive start, and by the time the first quarter came to an end, its own 8-0 run helped cut the deficit to three at 15-12.
The Eagles took a lead into halftime, but a late Hillsdale surge put that advantage at 28-26. Ashland was unable to pull away in the third quarter, but the lead was five at 44-39 going into the final period.
Early in the fourth, redshirt freshman forward
Kyra Hill's 3-point field goal gave AU its largest lead to date at 47-39. Hillsdale, however, finished off a 14-2 run with a basket outside of the two-minute mark to go up 53-49.
Sophomore point guard
Ashley Mullet's trey pulled the Eagles to within a point at 53-52 heading into the last 90 seconds, but two missed free throws with no time remaining finished the game.
WRAPPING IT UP
- Mullet scored 14 points and dished out five assists, while graduate guard Jenna Badali posted 11 points off the bench.
- Ashland scored 15 points off 13 Chargers turnovers.
