Second-Half Surge Lifts Eagle Men To Win At Dragons

Ashland University's men's basketball team started the second half outscoring Tiffin 36-13, helping the Eagles to a 69-55 Great Midwest Athletic Conference win at the Dragons.

A fourth victory in the last five games puts Ashland at 11-5 overall and 5-3 in the Great Midwest, while Tiffin is 4-11, 0-8. The Eagles are a game out of first place, trailing both Walsh and Ohio Dominican.

Tiffin scored the game's first six points, but consecutive 3-point field goals from senior forward Maceo Williams and junior wing Cooper Davis worked the Ashland deficit down to 10-8. Sophomore forward Jason Moore made 1-of-2 free throws to pull the Eagles even at 16-all, then Moore's basket gave AU its first lead of the night at 18-16.

Another Dragons spurt, this one 7-0 to end the first half, allowed Tiffin to take a 27-22 lead into halftime.

Williams scored five quick points to lead Ashland to tie the score at 27-all early in the second half, then Davis' old-fashioned triple put the Eagles ahead by a 30-29 count.

Freshman guard Jason Henlon's layup gave Ashland the biggest lead for either team to that point at 43-36, then Moore hit two freebies for the Eagles' first double-digit lead of the night at 46-36.

AU's biggest advantage was 58-40 en route to the win.

DAVIS, WILLIAMS LEAD THE SCORING CHARGE
  • Davis scored a game-high 25 points, and Williams added 17. With eight rebounds, Williams is alone in fifth place on Ashland's all-time list with 752.
  • Moore rounded out three Eagles in double-digit scoring with 11 points.
  • After going 2-of-11 from the charity stripe in the first half, Ashland was 21-for-25 (84 percent) in the second half.
  • The Eagles kept the Dragons to 2-of-15 from 3-point range.
