The turn of the calendar to a new year has agreed with Ashland University women's basketball.
On Saturday (Jan. 10) afternoon in North Canton, Ohio, the Eagles won their fourth consecutive game – all in 2026 – 74-63 over Walsh, to move to 9-5 overall and 5-3 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. The Cavaliers are 8-8, 4-4.
Ashland has won 38 straight games in January going back to 2021.
Out of the game's first media timeout, Ashland led 14-8 after a 10-2 run. The Cavaliers, however, rallied to go into the second quarter tied at 16. The second quarter was all Eagles, however, as Ashland out-scored Walsh 26-7 in the stanza to take a 42-23 lead into halftime.
Freshman forward
Jenna Slates nearly recorded a double-double by the break (14 points, nine rebounds), while the Eagles kept the Cavaliers to 30.3-percent shooting from the field and 2-of-15 from 3-point range in the first 20 minutes.
Walsh turned the tables on Ashland to begin the second half, pulling to within 11 points at 51-40. The Eagles, however, kept the Cavs at bay for the remainder of the third quarter, and led 62-49 going into the fourth.
AU continued to keep Walsh at arm's length throughout the fourth quarter en route to victory.
SLATES SETS CAREER-HIGHS IN LATEST DOUBLE-DOUBLE
- Slates scored a career-high 26 points to go with 14 rebounds for her eighth double-double in 14 collegiate games. Her four assists also were an early career best.
- Sophomore point guard Ashley Mullet scored 15 points, while junior guard Gia Casalinova came off the bench for 10 points.
- Ashland out-rebounded Walsh by a 38-28 margin in the victory.
