Moon Takes Gold In Outdoor Worlds Pole Vault Final

Eagle Hall Of Famer Wins Title In Tokyo, Four Years After Earning Olympic Gold In Japanese Capital

Ashland University Hall of Famer Katie Moon was the No. 1-ranked women's pole vaulter in the world entering the 2025 World Athletics Outdoor Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

Moon cleared her second attempt at 4.90 meters/16-feet-0¾ on Wednesday (Sept. 17) morning in the finals of the women's pole vault – making her No. 1 ranking stand up and giving her a third World Athletics outdoor title for Team USA.

That mark is a season PR for Moon, who also won world outdoor championships in 2022 and 2023 (third consecutive title, no outdoor worlds in 2024 due to the Summer Olympics).

USA's Sandi Morris was second at 4.85 meters/15-feet-11, and Slovenia's Tina Sutej took third at 4.80 meters/15-feet-9.

The 2020 Summer Olympics gold medalist (contested in 2021, and in Tokyo) and 2024 Summer Olympics silver medalist for Team USA in the women's pole vault, Moon also has won five USA Track & Field (USATF) indoor titles and two USATF outdoor championships.

A 2024 inductee into the Ashland University Hall of Fame, Moon was a two-time NCAA Division II national champion and three-time D-II All-American in the pole vault, and continues to boast school women's pole vault records both indoors (4.27 meters/14-feet-0) and outdoors (4.44 meters/14-feet-6¾).

Moon's PR in 2021 of 4.95 meters/16-feet-2¾ is fifth-best in world history.
