All any collegiate student-athlete wants is a shot at a championship.
Â
Thanks to 6-5 and 6-3 wins over No. RV Northwood on Saturday (April 26) at Tomassi Stadium and Donges Field at the Archer Ballpark Complex, the No. RV Ashland University baseball team still has that shot – as both the Eagles and Timberwolves are tied atop the Great Midwest Athletic Conference's North Division.
Â
Ashland improves to 32-12 overall and 21-5 in the Great Midwest, while the Timberwolves are 27-16, 21-5. The Eagles have won 26 of their last 32 contests.
"Two well-played games, both teams. They're a good opponent," said Ashland head coach
John Schaly. "We played well, and got good pitching, played defense, got clutch hitting. We played pretty well in all phases of the game."
Junior shortstop
Collin Overholt got AU going in the bottom of the second of the first contest with a solo home run – his team-leading ninth of the season. The Eagles upped their lead to 3-0 in the fourth when junior second baseman
Gavin Dobbels drove in two with a single.
Â
A four-run fifth put the Timberwolves up 4-3, but in the bottom of the seventh, junior first baseman
Sam Witt launched his fourth round-tripper of 2025 to tie the game at 4.
Â
Northwood went back on top with a run in the eighth, but in the bottom of the inning, graduate designated hitter
Max Caron's two-out, two-run single put Ashland in the lead for good.
Â
Overholt began Game 2 with an RBI single in the first, then the T'Wolves tied the game at 1 with a run in the third.
Â
Witt hit his fifth homer of the season in the third, a three-run shot, to put AU ahead 4-1. Caron's RBI on a Northwood error and a Witt RBI single in the fourth made it a 6-1 contest.
Â
Northwood scored twice in the seventh, but the Eagles held on for the Saturday sweep.

WITT HITS IN BUNCHES…AND THE REST OF THE STORY
- For the doubleheader, Witt went 5-for-8 with two home runs, two runs scored and five RBIs. Recently returning to the lineup following injury, Witt now is hitting .345 with five homers and 16 RBIs in just 84 at-bats.
- Said Witt, "These first two games were really, really important. Our main goal is to win the series. The last two years have been pretty frustrating for me, and I just feel very blessed to be out there and compete with my buddies, and help our team win."
- "He's a key part of our lineup, and now that he's back in there, that's an added plus in our lineup," Schaly said.
- In Game 1, Caron and Dobbels each drove in two runs, senior left-handed pitcher Brendan Beaver (2-4) got the relief win after two innings of work, and senior lefty John Essig earned his second save with one pitch.
- The nightcap saw senior righty Cam Scott (5-1) author a complete-game eight-hitter, striking out two and allowing three runs and a walk. Scott has now won five consecutive decisions.
- "He's throwing strikes, getting ahead of hitters, mixing pitches well," Schaly said. "He had a little rough start, but he's a good pitcher."
