Ashland University's No. RV baseball team resumed play on its annual Florida Spring Break trip on Wednesday (March 5), losing to No. 20 Grand Valley State, 5-2.
Â
The Eagles are 5-5, and the Lakers are 9-2.
Â
Thanks to a sacrifice fly from junior left fielder
Billy Howard, Ashland took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Grand Valley, however, scored single runs in the bottom of the third, fourth and seventh innings to go up 3-1.
Â
The Eagles cut their deficit in half in the eighth when junior second baseman
Gavin Dobbels collected a run-scoring double. The Lakers then scored two insurance runs in the bottom of the frame.
Â
…AND THE REST OF THE STORY
- Dobbels and senior designated hitter Cam Scott each had two of AU's seven hits.
- Senior left-handed pitcher Brendan Beaver (0-3) threw the first 6 1/3 innings, allowing nine hits, three runs and no walks and striking out four.
