Softball Sweeps At KWC, Off To 7-1 Conference Start

Lis Earns Wins In Both Ends Of Twinbill Vs. Panthers

It needed a couple more innings than scheduled to finish it off, but on Friday (March 28), Ashland University's softball team swept Kentucky Wesleyan on the road, 10-1 and 2-1 in nine innings.

The Eagles, winners of nine of the last 10 games, move to 17-9 overall and 7-1 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. Ashland remains in third place in the league as of early Friday evening.

Game 1's scoreless tie was broken by the Eagles in the top of the third inning, when senior designated player Cassidy Shaffer walked with the bases loaded, sophomore third baseman Sophia Martin delivered a two-run single, sophomore left fielder Maren Metikosh added a run-scoring single, and junior shortstop Amanda Kolar finished off the five-run outburst with an RBI single.

Kentucky Wesleyan (4-23, 0-8) came back with a single run in the bottom of the third, but senior first baseman Lily Rockwell got that run back in the fifth on an RBI double.

Ashland finished off the opener with four runs in the seventh – four bases-loaded walks from freshman pinch-hitter Gabby Perod, sophomore catcher Delaney Keith, Shaffer and Martin.

In Game 2, the Panthers struck first, scoring a run in the third. Ashland came right back in the fourth to knot the score when junior pitcher Delaney Lis lifted a sacrifice fly.

The game stayed at 1-1 until the top of the ninth, when senior right fielder Laney Eller delivered an RBI single.

LIS SHUTS THEM DOWN ALL DAY…AND THE REST OF THE STORY
  • In Game 1, Lis (8-2) earned the pitching win after allowing no runs, one hit and one walk and striking out two in 4 1/3 innings of relief.
  • Martin drove in three runs to open the day, Shaffer added two RBIs, and sophomore right fielder Delaney Maynard, Martin and Rockwell each collected two hits.
  • Lis (9-2) also won the nightcap, going all nine innings, striking out three and yielding seven hits, one run and no walks.
  • With a stolen base in Game 2, junior second baseman Danielle Robbins now has 57 as an Eagle – six away from tying Sunny Litteral for the AU all-time mark.
