Two-Out Runs, Pitching And Defense Lead Eagles To Series Win Over Saints

On Sunday (March 23) afternoon at Tomassi Stadium and Donges Field at the Archer Ballpark Complex, Ashland University's baseball team finished off its second straight Great Midwest Athletic Conference series win following a 7-1 victory over Thomas More.

The Eagles are 15-7 overall and 7-1 in the conference, one game behind Northwood in the early-season North Division standings. The Saints are 6-15, 1-7.

Ashland is 9-1 in its last 10 contests.

The Saints got on the board first with a run in the top of the opening inning. The Eagles took the lead for the first time in the bottom of the second, as redshirt freshman center fielder Sean Krueckeberg delivered a two-out, two-run double.

Ashland and Thomas More remained at 2-1 until the bottom of the sixth, when, with two outs again, junior shortstop Collin Overholt launched a two-run double of his own. Later in the sixth, freshman first baseman Carter Weaver added a run-scoring hit for a 5-1 advantage.

Senior right-handed closer Chase Carter got AU out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh, then graduate designated hitter Max Caron drove in two more in the eighth on a double.

Caron finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored on Sunday. He now is slashing .508/.592/.730 this season, and during his current 15-game hitting streak, is 28-for-53 (.528) with 14 RBIs and nine multi-hit games.

PITCHING AND DEFENSE…AND THE REST OF THE STORY
  • Senior righty Cam Scott (1-1) turned in his best game on the mound so far this spring, going six innings, striking out eight, and allowing three hits, a run and three walks. Carter got the last eight outs for his fifth save of 2025.
  • Krueckeberg and Overholt each had two hits and two RBIs in the victory.
  • In winning the last three games of the series, the Eagles made a total of one error.
