Softball Starts Florida Trip With Two Victories

To begin the annual Florida Spring Break trip on Sunday (March 2), Ashland University's softball team topped both Edinboro, 5-2, and California, Pa., 10-1 in five innings.

The Eagles moved to 5-3 on the young season with a now-three-game winning streak.

Against the Fighting Scots, Ashland scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single from senior designated player Cassidy Shaffer, Shaffer scoring on a wild pitch and sophomore catcher Sophia Martin stealing home.

Junior third baseman Amanda Kolar followed with an RBI single in the bottom of the second, then junior second baseman Danielle Robbins did the same in the bottom of the fourth.

Shaffer (1-0) also earned the win in the pitcher's circle in a complete-game four-hitter.

The game against the Vulcans saw the Eagles score four times in the top of the first on a Shaffer RBI fielder's choice and a three-run home run from senior first baseman Lily Rockwell.

Ashland then scored six times in the top of the fourth – an RBI error off Shaffer's bat, a Martin sacrifice fly, a Rockwell RBI single, a two-run double by sophomore catcher Delaney Keith and a run-scoring triple from sophomore right fielder Delaney Maynard.

Junior pitcher Delaney Lis (2-1) went the first four innings, allowing one run and two hits.
