Three Eagles Garner Great Midwest Athlete Of The Week Recognition

As announced by the Great Midwest Athletic Conference on Monday (Dec. 8) afternoon, three Ashland University student-athletes – junior wing Cooper Davis (men's basketball), freshman Jon Lutz (men's indoor track) and junior Molly Winner (women's indoor field) – have been recognized as Athletes of the Week for their standout performances over the past weekend.

On Saturday (Dec. 6) in an 85-81 win over Northwood in the 2025-26 Great Midwest opener at the Sherrill Hudson Court at Kates Gymnasium, Davis finished with career highs of 36 points, seven 3-point field goals and 11 total field goals made. He also grabbed five rebounds.

So far this season, Davis is averaging 17.4 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game, while making 89.5 percent from the free-throw line and a team-best 25 triples.

Ashland's men (6-2 overall, 1-0 Great Midwest) will travel to Kentucky Wesleyan (4-4, 0-2) for another league game on Thursday (Dec. 11) at 8:45 p.m. (7:45 p.m. Central).

On Friday (Dec. 5) at the season-opening Saginaw Valley State Holiday Open, Lutz started his collegiate career in fine fashion by finishing in second place in the men's 60-meter hurdles in 8.01 seconds. In doing so, he tied Trevor Bassitt's program freshman indoor record in the event.

Lutz is tied for eighth in NCAA Division II in the men's 60 hurdles early in the new campaign.

Winner earned two victories at Saginaw on Friday, taking both the women's shot put at 15.22 meters/49-feet-11¼ and the women's weight throw at 21.12 meters/69-feet-3½.

She is the top-ranked D-II woman in the weight throw, and is No. 5 in the country in the women's shot put.

Ashland's men's and women's indoor track and field teams will return to competition on Jan. 16 at Akron's Al Campbell Invitational.
