Carter Smith were the Ashland University standouts as the 2025-26 indoor track and field season got underway on Friday (Dec. 5) at the Saginaw Valley State Holiday Open.
All three won their respective events, while earning provisional marks toward the 2026 NCAA Division II Championships in Virginia Beach, Va., on March 13-14. Winner had Friday's top mark in both the women's shot put at 15.22 meters/49-feet-11¼ and the women's weight throw at 21.12 meters/69-feet-3½, Avance crossed the finish line first in the women's 800-meter run in 2:10.71, and Smith won the men's pole vault at 4.80 meters/15-feet-9.
In the men's 60 hurdles, both freshman
Jon Lutz (second, 8.01 seconds, tying
Trevor Bassitt's program freshman indoor record) and sophomore
Ty Allen (third, 8.10 seconds) earned provisional times. Junior
Leslie Pollock was second in the women's weight throw with a provo of 20.29 meters/66-feet-7, while sophomore
Hayden Valenti's third-place showing in the men's weight throw at 19.01 meters/62-feet-4½ also was a provo mark.
