Eagle Men Lose At Home To Undefeated Cardinals

On Sunday (Nov. 30) afternoon at the Sherrill Hudson Court at Kates Gymnasium, the Ashland University men's basketball team lost 80-71 to Saginaw Valley State in a Midwest Regional non-conference contest.

The Eagles are 5-2 after having their five-game winning streak snapped, and the Cardinals remain undefeated on the young season at 5-0.

Ashland had an early 8-5 lead, with all eight points coming from junior wing Destin Logan. At the game's first media timeout, and after a frenetic early scoring pace, the Cardinals led, 15-14.

Coming out of that stoppage, however, the Eagles went on a 9-0 run to regain the advantage. Saginaw Valley State, however, responded with a 9-0 run of its own to go back on top.

The Cardinals ran their lead to a half-high nine points at 37-28, but yet another 9-0 run allowed Ashland to tie the game at 37 right before halftime. SVSU made two free throws with 2.1 seconds left to go into the locker room with the lead.

It was a five-point lead for the Eagles at 50-45 early in the second half, but by the time the Cardinals outscored AU 25-12 over the next 11 minutes, Saginaw Valley had a 70-62 lead with four minutes to play.

WRAPPING IT UP
  • Senior forward Maceo Williams scored 26 points to end the game with exactly 1,500 in his career – becoming the 13th in program history to accomplish the feat.
  • Logan added 13 points, and redshirt freshman point guard Jordan Edwards ended with eight points, 10 assists and six rebounds.
  • The Eagles turned the ball over just five times (to 17 assists), and made 10-of-11 from the free-throw line.
