No. 16 AU Women End Tennessee Trip With Win At No. 12 Union

The No. 16-ranked Ashland University women's basketball team will return home at 3-2 following a second straight win in Tennessee, 77-71, over No. 12 Union on Monday (Nov. 24) night.

Home-standing Union is 4-3 after scoring 14 points less than its season average (85.3 ppg.) coming into the game.

Ashland led 11-7 outside of the game's first media timeout, and sophomore guard Corri Vermilya had seven of those early points. Union then scored eight points in a row, helping lead to a 16-13 Bulldogs lead through one.

Union extended that advantage to 20-13 to start the second quarter, but a Vermilya layup at the first-half buzzer cut the Bulldog lead to two points at 35-33 at the break – and gave her 11 heading into the locker room.

Back-to-back 3-point field goals from graduate guard Jenna Badali put Ashland back on top at 44-40 early in the third period, then baskets from junior forward Katelyn Harabedian, freshman forward Jenna Slates and Harabedian moved the Eagle advantage to 50-40.

Ashland led by double digits for most of the third, but heading into the fourth, that lead was 56-49. Consecutive triples from sophomore point guard Ashley Mullet lifted the Eagles to a game-best lead at 62-50. Mullet's third trey of the quarter gave AU a double-digit lead again at 67-57.

A DOUBLE-DOUBLE…AND NEARLY TWO MORE
  • Slates' first career collegiate double-double featured career highs of 16 points and 16 rebounds.
  • Junior guard Lexi Howe ended with 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists, and Vermilya added 14 points and nine boards.
  • Mullet posted 11 points, as four Eagles scored in double figures.
  • The Eagles out-rebounded the Bulldogs by a 50-38 count.
  • Ashland kept Union to 35.6-percent shooting from the field and 26.3 percent from 3-point range.
