Ashland University's men's basketball team nearly led throughout its game at Wayne State on Sunday (Nov. 16) afternoon, earning a 76-64 victory.
Both teams are 1-1 on the early season.
The Eagles jumped out to a 13-2 lead, and with nine minutes to go until halftime, that advantage was 23-9.
Wayne State turned in a 10-0 run thereafter to cut its deficit to four points, but junior wing
Cooper Davis' 3-point field goal put a halt to the Warriors' momentum.
Senior forward
Maceo Williams put on a show in the first half, scoring 19 points in 16 minutes on 8-of-12 shooting, helping Ashland to a 36-31 halftime lead. Williams' shooting helped AU to go 50.0 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes.
The Eagles continued to keep the Warriors at arm's length to begin the second half, and led 51-42 with 13 minutes left thanks to a 5-0 spurt. A 7-0 AU run lifted it to a 58-44 advantage more than halfway through the second.
Ashland's biggest lead was 18 points at 68-50 en route to victory.
WILLIAMS STRONG FROM THE FIELD, DAVIS STRONG FROM THE LINE
- Williams ended with a game-high 28 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the field, while Davis was 10-of-10 from the free-throw line en route to 15 points and nine rebounds.
- Redshirt freshman point guard Jordan Edwards chipped in with 10 points and six assists.
- The Eagles were accurate in all phases on Sunday, making 51.0 percent from the field, 50.0 percent from 3-point range and 94.4 percent from the charity stripe.
