The Youth Day crowd on Saturday (Oct. 18) afternoon at Ferguson Field saw Ashland University's men's soccer team come back in the second half for a 1-1 tie against Lake Erie in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference contest.
Looking to move up in the Great Midwest table and into a spot in the conference tournament, the Eagles are 4-7-2 overall and 3-6-1 in the league. The Storm are 4-3-7, 4-3-3.
"Our backs are against the wall. We know that," said Ashland head coach
Nick Roberts. "But, we're going to keep going and keep trying to win every game."
The scoreless tie was broken by Lake Erie in the 48
th minute, when Will Smestad punched the ball in the back of the AU goal on a scramble in front. Ashland's answer came in the 66
th minute, when freshman forward
Tom Woodward got his own blocked shot back in front of the Storm net for his team-leading sixth goal of the season.
"Tommy's getting used to the game over here," Roberts said. "A huge talent for the future."
HARRISON STAYS STRONG IN AU GOAL
- Junior goalkeeper Zach Harrison (1-1-1) made two saves on Saturday in his third start of the fall.
- "We don't really know who's our starting keeper yet," Roberts said. "We felt that Zach deserved to run out, and it still could change game to game, to be honest."
- Lake Erie out-shot Ashland, 10-4, and the corner kicks were fairly even (4-3 Storm).
