Once again, the success of Ashland University's athletic department extends far beyond the venues of competition.
For a third consecutive semester, each of Ashland's athletic teams finished with a grade-point average of higher than 3.0. In the fall 2024 semester, the Eagle athletic department's combined GPA was 3.35.
Â
"Our student-athletes work hard in and out of the classroom, and it is reflected in how high their team GPAs were in the fall," said
Elizabeth Hoge, Assistant Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator/Director of Academic Support Services for Athletics. "With each team being over a 3.0, it shows how well our students and coaches work to ensure that everyone is successful and taking pride in their work.
Â
"This past fall, we have had the highest average GPA since I first started in 2018, and it has been exciting to watch it continue to improve each semester. Shout out to our success coach
Dajuan Seward for all he does with our student-athletes, and thank you to the advisors, tutors, and writing center coaches for helping out student-athletes out."
Â
Said
Al King, Ashland Director of Athletics, "I think our coaches and student-athletes are driven to be successful in the classroom. I believe they take just as much pride in their academic success as they do their athletic accomplishments. That's not always an easy message to drive home.
Â
"I give our coaches, plus our academic counselors Elizabeth and DaJuan, a ton of credit for getting this done. They've put the focus where it belongs and made it very clear that's the standard and it will always be the standard."
Â
Fall 2024 marked the fourth time in the last five semesters (fall 2022, fall 2023, spring 2024 and fall 2024) in which all AU teams ended with a GPA of better than 3.0.
Â
So far in 2024-25, three Eagle student-athletes have been lauded as College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-Americans – men's soccer fifth-year midfielder
Oliver Whaley (first team), women's soccer junior forward
Dani Hicks (second team) and women's soccer senior forward
McKinley Mendenhall (third team).
