Seeking to stay near the top of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference standings, the No. 14-ranked Ashland University women's basketball team earned a ninth straight win, 82-64, on Thursday (Jan. 16) night at Findlay.
The Eagles are 15-3 overall and 7-1 in the league, while the Oilers are 14-4, 7-2 after seeing their nine-game win streak snapped.
A 14
th consecutive victory in the series keeps Ashland one game behind first-place Malone in the loss column.
The Oilers led 6-4 early, but a 13-2 Eagle run helped lead to a 17-11 Ashland advantage heading into the second quarter. Findlay was kept to 4-of-12 shooting in the opening period.
By halftime, another AU run – this one 12-4 at the end of the first half – put it up 37-26. The Eagles made half of their shots beyond the 3-point line (7-for-14), and senior forward
Zoe Miller had 12 points and five rebounds in 15 minutes on the floor.
The two teams basically played even in the third quarter, but a late Ashland surge put it on top 59-43 going into the fourth. The Eagles went up by 20 points at 75-55 inside of the four-minute mark of the final stanza en route to victory.
